Announcing – the final fledge!

Last night we announced that D27 hadn’t fledged yet. And it hadn’t – at least, not at 1:15pm. But I missed D27’s flight from the nest at 2:16pm. It wasn’t an especially long flight given that D27 returned fairly quickly, and we didn’t have boots on the ground to verify that no one was in the nest…at least, not at 2:16pm! However, after a great deal of discussion with moderators and a thorough review of footage from the time period, I’m very comfortable announcing that D27 fledged at 2:16pm on June 22nd! Congratulations, D27! Here is a video: https://youtu.be/-uM6gSoOedo

I was entering banding records yesterday and wasn’t watching live when it happened, so I have to apologize for reviewing the wrong segment of the video. D27 was getting in a little flight practice at 1:15pm and fooled me, as you can see here. This isn’t a fledge: https://youtu.be/DREo1njClsM. Fortunately, D27 didn’t fool everyone!

The next few weeks will be filled with excitement as the Tree Amigos begin honing their hunting and flight skills by chasing, stealing, squabbling, and swooping into the hatchery retention pond. We’ll be watching on the ground and from the new hatchery cam, and setting up a 2017 Decorah Eagles Fan Photos to share pictures from our friends and boots on the ground. Go, eagles – and the best of luck to all of you in flight school!
