Mae's History
Mae is the daughter of MF-1. In 1987, MF-1 (a falcon produced by the Raptor Resource Project for release by the Minnesota Falconers Association) fledged wild young from the top of the MultiFoods Tower in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This marked the first time that a falcon had nested mid-continent since the species’ extirpation in the early to mid-1960s. Mae was one of these chicks.

Falcons are migratory. When Mae returned from her first year, she selected the King Plant in Oak Park Heights, Minnesota, along the St. Croix River, as her territory. A plant employee noticed the falcon and called in a Stillwater falconer, Paul Simonet, to verify the bird (at this time, falcons were very, very rare!).

NSP agreed to let the Raptor Resource Project install a nest box on the King Plant smokestack. Mae adopted it very quickly and has never left. Between 1990 and 2003, Mae fledged 33 chicks.

Mae's progeny include:

  • Smoke: Smoke is a second generation birdcam falcon. In 1998, the world watched Mae raise Smoke and his brother, Prescott. Smoke is now nesting at the High Bridge plant, which is featured on the High Bridge BirdCam.
  • Marty, who nested in Chicago from 1994 through 1998.
  • Amy, who nested at Maasen's Bluff in 2001 and was one of the first falcons to cross over from smokestacks to cliffs.
