This is one of the osprey nests that I monitor.  The article is incorrect on a lot of facts, but correct in that the light pole is coming down.

We have an Osprey nest in my neck of the woods, so to speak... and last weekend I went birding and saw one of the birds dive down into the pond we were visiting and snatch a fish, he/she then shook of in mid-air and holding the fish in his talons flew off towards the nest, which you can see from the road into the pond area. We are going on a picnic in the same area on Sunday and hope to see this again.
Any one know how to tell the male from female? They are sitting on the nest as well so soon there will be little fish hawks.
Here is a link to a few pictures, on photobucket.

St. Vrain State Park, just west of I-25 off of State highway 119 in Del Camino, CO. There are several ponds and lots of birds, including the osprey nest, pelicans, and rookery (spelling) of herons and cranes. At is a nice area to day visit or they have camping as well.
That is the osprey in the last photo of SV Ponds just before he dove in for the fish, I missed the shot but saw the action very exciting.

gmabird, as in most raptors, the female is larger than the male.  Also, the female normally has darker feathering (like a necklace) on her upper front.

Isn't it exciting to watch the osprey dive?  I was lucky to find an osprey fishing hole last year where osprey pair from at least 3 pairs hunted.

Kitten: You can rent anytime! There really is not much snow here, we are on the flatlands of Colorado not the mountains where most of the snow falls. I am very lucky to have so many birds around, they help keep me occupied.
Diane: thank you for the info on helping to identify, it will be hard as I have only seen one bird at a time as one stays on the nest. My thoughts are the little ones are still way little ones, lol.

Thanks so much for the photos, gmabird.  I was really interested in seeing the osprey; I had no idea they were so near by (I'm in Denver, moving to Greeley soon).

added 11 new photos to photobucket

http://s235.photobucket.com/albums/ee229/gdasch/Birding%20May2010/

Enjoy!
note to Linda: stop by the ponds sometime on the way up to Greeley take highway 119 at Del Camino west to the park and the nest is before you get into the state park to the west you will see the phone poles in the field. It cost $6 for a day pass at the ponds but it is worth it to bird there. the area is clean and has tables, fire grills, restrooms and such. they also have overnight camping for a fee. Welcome to the neighborhood!

note to Nora:  You can rent any time! If you are ever out in Colorado just let me know...I dont get around like I used to but I can tell you where to visit for great birding and animal watching as well. Have you ever seen a moose in the wild? Pretty cool.

to everyone: thanks for the nice comments and glad you all enjoy the photos.

Thanks for the directions! It sounds like a great place - I look forward to visiting and checking out the birds.  I have to admit I'm embarrassed that I didn't know there was a state park there  Embarrassed
