Close up of hack site Distant view of hack site
The hack site was chosen after a great deal of boat, plane, and on-foot surveying. It offered heavy forest - the habitat of Barred Owls but not Great Horned Owls, which prey on Peregrine young and could have proven a real threat to the success of the hack. It was accessible by trail - albeit a steep up-down-up-down sort of trail - which made it easier to bring hack boxes and food in. It was observable from an observation deck and by boat, making it easy to watch Peregrines without alarming them. And the US Park Service was very helpful.
