April 11, 2019: Mom feeds D32 and D33

Today’s big story? Wind! Did you cover your eyes? Turn away from the computer? Plaintively ask or loudly demand that the wind stop? Our eagles and falcons are pros at handling windy weather and our nest trees are sturdy, but the wind rodeo had nests rocking, hearts pumping, and mice clicking as we tried to brush eaglets back into the egg cup and shoo the wind away! We liked all of these videos, but we were so impressed by DM2

April 10, 2019: A snowy day at both Decorah nests!

Get yourself a mug of something warm for tonight’s Nestflix and news! Michelle laid her fourth egg at Great Spirit Bluff today, snow moved into the Decorah area, watchers worried about D33 getting enough food (D33 is getting enough food – SuperMom knows her eaglet business!) and birds came and went on the Flyway. We might see a mini-stackup on the Flyway since snow and blizzard conditions are forecast north for the next day and a half. We’re not happy

D27 Phones Home!

D27's map: April 8, 2019

Thanks for writing, D27! D27’s latest postcard puts her back in the Decorah area after a brief sojourn to the Mississippi River. On April 4, we tracked her to within about 2600 feet of her natal nest. She wandered throughout the day, ending up about 4.5 miles NW of her nest at 9:42PM. She did not go near her natal nest on the 5th, which means that it was not her we spotted on camera…although we can’t yet rule out

April 8, 2019: DM2 feeds

Thank you to everyone who was able to participate in our first hatch fundraiser! While we watched and chatted, little crops swelled, D32 and D33 ate (both parents fed), tussled, and went feet up! Compare their tiny talons to see how much growing D32 has already done, and enjoy all of these videos. Sometimes I have a favorite, but I loved all of these! Thanks so much to our camera operators and videomakers for their hard work finding and sharing

Decorah Bald Eagle Tracking Study, 2011-2018

D1 in August of 2011

We began the Decorah bald eagle tracking study in 2011 after RRP’s founder Bob Anderson and I decided to answer the question that followers most often asked him: “Where do the eagles go when they leave Decorah?” Phase One: The Eagle Valley Tracking Study Eagle Valley’s (EV) tracking project began as a partnership with researchers from The Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota. After their field research program ended in 2002, EV took over with the generous financial support

Your questions, answered: When will DM2 start feeding?

04/06/19: DM2 and feeding

I asked our moderators for their top questions of the day. You wanted to know: ‘When will DM2 start feeding his young?’. This is our answer.  Note: The morning after this blog was written, D32 did his first feeding! You can watch that here: https://youtu.be/FhMf1CCJtBs It is interesting and sometimes nerve-wracking to watch what is most likely a brand-new eagle father after years of watching Dad, who had eagle fatherhood down. We’re going to talk about what DM2 is doing first:

Day one: sitting up and feeding

Let’s start with a nest round-up! We have one eaglet in Decorah and are waiting for hatch on the second egg. D32 has a healthy appetite and has been working on its feeding and food coma skills today! DM2 hasn’t fed his nestling eaglet yet, but he has brought in fish and done his share of brooding (when Mom allowed it). We have one eaglet at Decorah North. In case you missed the announcement, DN10 did not make it past
