Dr. Laura on Mom’s Eye

January 29, 2020: Mom's eye up close

Thanks to our camera operators’ diligent work and John’s high-powered cameras, we got some excellent photos of Mom’s right eye today! We forwarded them to Dr. Laura, who said: I think that what we are seeing is a scar on the cornea; the cornea becomes opaque instead of clear when it’s been damaged. It does appear slightly raised, which is a bit unusual, so she could also have a foreign object (a small piece of bark, a stick, a grass

Decorah North Eagles 1/28/20: Down by the stream – https://youtu.be/hzCQTjiKBWY. Mr. North and DNF perch by the stream before flying out. Check out DNF’s spa-time at 14:31 as she preens, scratches, shakes out her tail, and gets under her wings at 15:59. Spa-time over, Mr. North comes into the nest to do a little work. Look for some nice close-ups beginning in the 30th minute, a good look at the egg-cup’s basement at 30:57, DNF hauling in a monster stick

Nestflix: Decorah Eagles, Mom’s Eye

January 25, 2020: Mom's right eye

We’ll do a full video roundup tomorrow, but we wanted to share a couple videos from earlier today. We don’t get any close-ups of Mom’s eye, but she is keeping it open a little more than she has been and dragging DM2 all around the nest to boot! Her eye is still sore, but it isn’t discolored, visibly damaged, or leaking fluid. While time will tell, we are hopeful that she is on the mend! Decorah Eagles 1/27/20: Mom returns w/stick,

January 24, 2020: DM2's awesome wingspan

Love is in the air at Fort St. Vrain, Mr. North and DNF shovel snow, DM2 makes a brief visit to the nest, and Mom and DM2 perch on the maple. It was great to see them: happy Fri-yay, everyone! Decorah Eagles 1/24/20: Mom and DM2 perch on the maple – https://youtu.be/EiNhAeEVKnw. We know it’s winter. We know that eagles aren’t always active in the cold. We know that Mom can open her tender right eye and see well enough

Where is eagle D27?

January 23, 2020: D27's map

D27 sent us an airmail! As Brett said, she in engaged in typical meandering around her natal area. Her farthest point north this month was up near Bluffton: less than a mile from Bob’s old farm/breeding project and nine miles distant from her natal nest. Her farthest point south was down near Eldorado, 13 miles distant from her natal nest. D27 spent most of her time in and around Decorah and passed near the nest three times: once on January

January 23, 2020: Mom’s Eye

January 23, 2020: Mom closes her eyes

Everyone is concerned about Mom Decorah’s right eye. On January 20th, sharp-eyed watchers let us know that she was keeping her right eye mostly or completely shut. We saw it as well, but didn’t know what was going on. Mom’s eye wasn’t bloody and she was acting like a normal territorial adult eagle. Some rabbit fur lodged in the upper outside corner of her right eye on January 14 and ice appeared to be accumulating on her ‘eyelashes’ or rimal

January 21, 2020: A Red-Bellied Woodpecker at Decorah North

We didn’t see much of the Decorah and Decorah North eagles today, but the temperature is rising, which could make them busier a little later this week. In the meantime, we have DM2’s brief visit to the nest and a nice look at Mr. North, DNF, and a hungry red-bellied woodpecker! Thanks to our camera operators and video makers for finding and sharing every detail, and to you for watching, learning, and caring! We hope you enjoy these videos as

Martin Luther King and Environmental Justice

Martin Luther King

What is environmental justice and how does it connect to Martin Luther King and Martin Luther King Day? The environmental justice movement addresses a statistical fact: people who live, work and play in America’s most polluted environments are most commonly people of color and the poor. In his 1967 Christmas sermon, Dr. King preached that: “It really boils down to this: that all life is interrelated. We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied into a single
