July 31, 2020: Nestflix from Decorah, Decorah North, and the Flyway

July 30: D36 at N2B

Grab the popcorn and sit back for some Nestflix (and a link to an article about our peregrine banding work)! We’re starting to see less of D34, D35, D36, and DN12 now that all four tween-eagles have discovered the wonder of flight, but the Flyway is busy – and getting busier – as birds and other animals begin preparing for fall. I liked all of these videos, but it was nice to see Mom and DM2 getting a little personal

Remembering Bob Anderson

Photo of Bob Anderson in 2014. Taken by David Lynch and used with his permission.

Today we are remembering Bob Anderson, founder of the Raptor Resource Project. Bob passed away unexpectedly on July 27 in 2015. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I wish Bob was here to share in the joy of what he began with the Decorah Eagle cam and everything that has come from it. It’s hard to believe it has been five years since he left us. RRP Board member and photographer David Lynch shared this photo. He

What’s On The Menu This Season at Our Nests?

April 18, 2020: A fully-stocked pant-tree!

By Sherri Elliott As the nesting season comes to a close we tally up all the prey deliveries we’ve caught on camera at Decorah Eagles and Decorah North Nest to provide an overview of the level of partnership between a bonded pair as well as the variety of food sources available in the nest territory and individual protein preferences within a habitat. By looking at daily deliveries we also key in to cycles of their season…courting and bonding before egg

D27, D35, and D36 check in!

July 22, 2020: D36

We have so many postcards this week! D27, D35, and D36 all phoned home – although the last two were just around the corner most of the time. To date, D36 has the longest flight record, at .365 miles from his natal nest. If you’ve trekked or biked Trout Run Trail past the hatchery, you’ve gone past the farm he visited. Both eagles are also spending a lot of time just upstream of the nest and just out of our

Reservations for 3 ~ Streamside Dining

July 21, 2020: Possum carrion in the creek! D36 left, D35 eating, D34 top waiting

By Sherri Elliott  Decorah Eagle Juveee’s D34, D35, and D36 are so busy with Outdoor School that we rarely get a glimpse of all of them hanging out together in one place, and at one time, so it was thrilling to see them all fly in one by one for a lunch date in one of our favorite places … just below the beloved Y-Branch. Everybirdie took turns dining on the choice entrée … marinated and brined sous vide possum,

July 20, 2020: Decorah, Decorah North, and the Flyway

July 20, 2020: D34 comes into the N1 tree for fish

Wondering how the eaglets are doing? Grab some popcorn, kick back with some Nestflix, and find out! We’ve got videos from Decorah, Decorah North, and the Mississippi Flyway. I hope you enjoy them all as much as we did! Decorah Eagles July 20, 2020: 5 am-7am Sunrise, D34 at Y, parent fishing, Mom with fish to N1, D34 gets it – https://youtu.be/kHZZ9Udjmjw. This is a beautiful video and I love seeing D34 mantling over its fish! Start at about 7:59

July 16, 2020: Nestflix from Decorah and Decorah North!

July 13. 2020: D34 mantles an invisible fish

Time to kick back with some Nestflix! Watchers are having a lot of fun trying to catch glimpses of the eaglets – D35 and D36 on the nest! D34 by the stream! DN12 chasing DNF along the streambank! I’m also enjoying the birdsong, especially at the North nest. Listen for fledglings – birds of many species are leaving their nests behind and you can hear them begging for food, chasing one another, chasing parents, and vocalizing. The great wheel of

Wednesday Nestflix from Decorah!

July 5, 2020: The Tree Amigos at N2B!

How are the Tree Amigos doing? Our observers on the ground and online report that they seem to be enjoying their newly acquired flight skills! We’ve seen them lounging around N2B, attending outdoor school with Mom, practicing eagle table manners (“My fish!”), and coping with red-winged blackbirds and blue jays. Grab the popcorn and get ready to catch up with D34, D35, and D36 with a Wednesday Nestflix megaroll! July 7, 2020: D34 closeups on the nest – https://youtu.be/Ptq-ehh6tNw. Just

July 1, 2020: Day Trip to Decorah

July 1, 2020: D35 on top of Command Central

Photos and story by Robin Brumm Decorah was calling … or would that be squeeeing? No matter, the pull was felt, and I decided I needed to go to Decorah again to see the Juvies, and headed out Wednesday morning at dark O’clock. When I got to Decorah, D35 was on the mulch pile at the hatchery. She flew off and landed on the roof of the hatchery kiosk and then flew to a shed roof and a garage roof

Bald Eagle (a poem)

June 23, 2020: Left to right - D34, D35, and D36

Terri sent me this poem and asked if we would like to publish it on our website. I think it is absolutely beautiful. I hope you love it as much as I did! Thanks to Terri for sharing it! Bald Eagle by Terri Kirby Erickson Decorah, Iowa, 2020 A bald eagle sits on the topmost branch of a white oak tree, wings outstretched, her pale head coppered by the morning sun. Her fledglings are sleeping once again, in the nest.
