Happy Friyay, everyone! With nestorations and sticky shenanigans in full swing at all of our nests, we thought we’d give everyone some food for thought on nests: https://www.raptorresource.org/2024/11/08/birds-and-nest-building/ and nest-building in Bald Eagles: https://www.raptorresource.org/2024/11/08/bald-eagles-nest-building-foraging-and-social-learning-musing/.
Meanwhile, our camera operators and videomakers have been hard at work to collect the very best from our nests. We hope you enjoy these videos as much as we did and as always, thanks so much for watching, sharing, learning, and especially for caring!
Decorah North Eagles
November 8, 2024: DNF & Mr North take a walk in the woods, find a snack – https://youtu.be/BT50bZ0NLOM?si=6_GrYJn0zBWEYuEv. Watch the whole thing or go to 11:08 to see DNF walk out of the woods with the remains of her snack. Both Norths sometimes fish from the bank of the creek, but we haven’t seen them do to much ground-hunting otherwise. Whatever they found – I think she’s defurring it? – it appears to have already have been dead. But it is fun to see her lumber out of the woods with the distinctive eagle dinosaur stomp! Look for closer views beginning around 13:50.
November 8, 2024: Mr North and DNF stop by for some nest work – https://youtu.be/Gtk2cq6SP0U?si=v5sPLfeSL205N7EB. DNF flies in at around 31 seconds and Mr. North joins her at 44 seconds in a lovely overhead fly-in. We get a nice sideview beginning at 2:12 and some nest digging at 2:38. We did our very best to fill all of the holes, but the Norths will undoubtedly find – and repair! – a few as they probe and dig in the nest. They don’t do a whole lot of nestorations, but it’s a lovely video! Listen for Canada Geese and woodpeckers in the background.
November 11, 2024: Beautiful coyote, thanks RRP – https://youtu.be/CslvZBu9AWI?si=bjUlOgksk8Ps1NZy. Exactly as the video says! This is a beautiful coyote.
Great Spirit Bluff
November 11, 2024: Falcon 18/U Zazu visiting, Amy banded him in 2022 at Winona – https://youtu.be/yWMQr0yZx8g?si=Jp7AsJjrmEq-5eKh. Zazu zazu, earthlings! A nice look at a visiting falcon at Great Spirit Bluff. Newman is clearly gone, since he wouldn’t tolerate an adult male falcon this close to his nest. But Great Spirit Bluff attracts falcons almost year round and we’ve seen several visitors. Zasu is from Bay State Milling roughly 30’ish miles upriver as the falcon flies and I’m wondering whether we’ll see him at US Bank La Crosse as well. We also spotted two falcons – Zazu and an immature female named Rosemary that John banded this spring at Castle Rock – on November 2: https://youtu.be/g10pKzS-rlQ?si=CXxevnwVv0gOgrG7.
Look for Trempealeau and Mississippi River Flyway videos tomorrow!
