Golden Eagle Diaries: GOEA 150

This Golden Eagle was banded in October 1992 in Ashfield, PA as a hatch-year bird, making him nearly 33 years old! That places him among the oldest known North American Golden Eagles.

Last week, GOEA team members Abbey and Ana trapped Golden Eagle 150 as part of our ongoing Golden Eagle research project. Abbey wrote:

“Last Tuesday, we trapped a potential mate to the female GOEA we trapped on Saturday. He was banded in October of 1992 in Ashfield, PA as a hatch year bird, making him almost 33 years old. This makes him one of the oldest known North American Golden Eagles!

“Since he is now backpacked with telemetry, we will continue to follow his journey and potentially know how long he lives. We’ve been in contact with Marek Plater, his original bander, who banded him on the Lehigh Furnace Gap, roughly 850 miles SE of the location we caught him in. Mark was thrilled to hear about his recapture!”

Your support not only keeps our cameras streaming but also funds essential research into the lives and movements of the birds we love. This is exactly why we band and track them! If you find a banded bird, make a bander happy and submit the number to reportband.gov!

Abbey and Joe Krumrie run River Valley Raptors. if you’ve gone to our After The Fledge party, you’ve probably seen them with their birds!
