June 29, 2023: DH2 considers fledging.

It’s time for NestFlix, so put your feet up on the bark-a-lounger, grab the popcorn, fix yourself a cold beverage, and get ready for videos from Decorah, Great Spirit Bluff, and the Flyway! In Decorah, DH2 is taking her sweet time to fledge and building skills and confidence as she hops, hovers, and branches ever higher in the tree. Great Spirit Bluff has been tough, but Jaycie P/60 survived last night’s attempted owl predation and it was wonderful to see

Who are we and how did the Decorah Eagles get started? A blog for followers old and new!

Dad at N2B

We’ve been getting a lot of questions from followers old and new. Who is the Raptor Resource Project, what do we do, where are we located, and what’s with this alphabet soup of eagle names? We are a non-profit 501c3 organization located in Decorah, Iowa. We research birds of prey and operate streaming cams from three bald eagle nests, multiple peregrine falcon nests, a turkey vulture’s nest, and an island in the Mississippi River. We organized to breed and release

Decorah Eagle DH2 update: Another branch closer to fledge!

June 28, 2023: DH2 on the Y-Branch

Hi everyone! We’re getting a lot of questions about DH2 right now. Based on what we can hear, we think she is still in the nest tree, but up above the cameras. We’re checking in with our people on the ground and will let everyone know if she’s fledged. But as of this post, we don’t think she has – although she is definitely feeling the wind beneath her wings! Stay tuned and get ready for an early morning tomorrow!

June 28, 2023: Eaglet Care After Fledge

May 4, 2023: feeding DH2

We’re getting a lot of questions about eaglet care post-fledge. Will HM and HD continue to take care of DH2? How will she learn to hunt for herself? When will she disperse? Here’s what we know: Post-fledgulation: It’s time for outdoor school! HD and HM will continue to provide food for DH2. Her rudimentary flight skills will improve rapidly as she refines her landing technique, meets her parents on feeding perches, soars high above the valley, and chases her parents

Who’s that eagle on the Y-Branch? It’s DH2!

June 24, 2023: DH2 on the Y-Branch

Who’s that eagle on the Y-Branch? It’s DH2! At 7:11 AM this morning, DH2 briefly hopped up to the cam branch before returning to the nest, followed by an excursion to the Y at 8:19 AM. DH2 turns 79 days old today. Will today be the day she fledges? Stay tuned and watch with us here: https://www.raptorresource.org/birdcams/decorah-eagles/. June 20, 2023: News and NestFlix from Decorah

June 20, 2023: Beautiful HM

Happy National American Eagle Day, everyone! DH2 turns 75 days old today, which means that fledge is right around the corner! We’ve seen our eaglet – I’m leaning toward ‘her’ right now based on size and fledge timing, although we don’t have a way to confirm that – wingersize, trampoline, and hover as fledge draws near. Will DH2 branch or just fly away? We’ll find out soon! Several people have expressed concern about DH2’s dinner menu. Is our eaglet really

June 16, 2023: Day Trip To Decorah!

June 16, 2023: Hatchery parent flying above. I think it was HM (Hatchery Mom)

Story and photos by Robin Brumm I’ve been to Decorah several times the last month and a half, but the last couple times I haven’t seen anyone in the N4 area. Friday was supposed to be sunny but a little cooler, so I decided it would be the perfect day to go. I got up at dark o’clock and headed over to Decorah. By the way, dark o’clock in the summer is a LOT earlier than in the other seasons,

When will DH2 fledge?

June 12, 2023: DH2 wingercizes and hops!

When will DH2 fledge? Our little eaglet will turn 67 days old this afternoon and has been learning its wings and building its strength as it wingercizes, jumps, bounces, and generally trampolines around the nest. While we don’t have an exact date of departure, we do know that: Male eaglets develop more quickly and tend to fledge earlier than their female siblings, although there is some overlap. In ‘The Bald Eagle’, Mark Stalmaster states that ‘…a single fledgling will fledge

Where did our eagle parents go?

May 17, 2023: Watch your toes, HM!

Some of you have expressed concern that our eagle parents aren’t properly caring for or feeding their young. We’re still seeing plenty of parental care – DH2 got three feedings just this morning! – but we’re also seeing a lot less brooding and a lot more alone time. While at least one eagle parent is always in the area, they aren’t always on the nest. What’s going on? Older eaglets no longer require (or want) continuous brooding, and their parents
