Nestflix: Videos and news from Decorah, Decorah North, the Flyway, and GSB!

January 21,2022: Mr. North gleams in the bright winter sunlight

Grab something warm, wrap yourself in a blanket, and get ready for some wonderful videos from Decorah North, Decorah, and the Mississippi Flyway. I love all of these videos, but don’t miss the North fish chase, the beautiful subadult eagle, or the stunning video of Mr. North! We’re still seeing short-eared owls on the Flyway and I hope to write a little bit more about them tomorrow. Eagles and falcons and owls, oh my! Decorah North January 24, 2022: Mr.

January 19, 2022: Nestflix and News!

January 18, 2022: C'mon, stick! DNF tries to free a large, wonky stick from the snow. She eventually gave up!

It’s about time, Mr. North and DNF! Although we liked seeing snowy owls and coyotes on the Mississippi Flyway, and loved watching Mom and DM2 in Decorah, I’m sure I wasn’t the only one wondering about Mr. North and DNF. North nestorations resumed this morning with two large talonfuls of grass – one brought in by Mr. North and one brought in by DNF. Why did the North eagles disappear for so long? We think that they were hunkering down

January 9, 2022: News and videos from Decorah North, Decorah, and the Flyway!

January 8, 2022: Mr. North and DNF at the North nest.

Kick back, put your feet up, and grab something warm to drink – it’s our Sunday night raptor movie marathon! Mr. North and DNF finally check in at the North nest, Mom is interested in fish, but not very interested in DM2, and snowy owls and coyotes are thrilling everyone who watches the Flyway! The dog owner in me loved ‘A canid is a canid’, I was thrilled to see both the Decorah and Decorah north eagles on Saturday, and

January 5, 2022: NestFlix from the Flyway, Decorah, and Decorah North

January 5, 2022: A Snowy Owl on the Flyway

I thought today’s big news would be Mom and DM2’s repeated appearances in and around N2B, N1, and the hatchery. But a Snowy Owl showed up on the Mississippi Flyway today – the first one we’ve ever seen there! – sending all of us into a flurry of texts, messages, chat, and Did you see?! We’ll post more about snowy owls tomorrow, but in the meantime, we have wonderful videos from the Flyway, Decorah, and Decorah North. Thanks to our

January 2, 2022: First NestFlix of the New Year

January 1, 2022: DM2 and Mom on the Y-Branch - two treasured eagles in a treasured place.

It’s the first NestFlix of the New Year! In Decorah, DM2 wears his puffiest winter jacket and Mom and DM2 perch on the Y-Branch: a late Christmas present from two beautiful eagles in a very treasured place! At Decorah North, a squirrel goes shopping and Mr. North and DNF do a little stick tango before DNF takes over the sticky decisions. Don’t miss the beautiful coyote or icy eagles on the Mississippi Flyway! Wintering animals at this latitude know how

December 27, 2021: Your Monday night Mega-movie Raptor-Roll!

December 24, 2021: DM2 and Mom show up at N2B and give watchers an early Christmas present!

It’s a Monday night Mega-movie Raptor-Roll! We have Mr. North and DNF, Mom and DM2, a Short-eared Owl, a Northern Harrier, and what I think is a Rough-Legged Hawk. Mom and DM2 have been thrilling us with appearances since December 21, DNF and Mr. North are hard at work on their nest, and tundra birds are taking a break on the Flyway. I loved all of these videos, but I especially enjoyed Mr. North’s hover, Mom and DM2’s repeated visits

North Nest Chases and Eagle Ice-Capades

December 20, 2021: And the answer to Mr. North's question? Not very often, especially with all of these hungry migrants coming through! Fortunately, the North Valley and the Mississippi River Flyway are rich in food resources!

Look at the North nest! The 2022 nest addition – which hadn’t been started when we did camera work in September – has got to be 10 to 12 inches high at least! We saw Mr. North and DNF begin bringing sticks to the nest on October 20. If the two added an average of four sticks every day since, they have added an incredible 288 sticks so far – and their pace should accelerate as the days begin to

Hawk Day on the Flyway: Mr. North and DNF tango!

December 14, 2021: A Rough-Legged Hawk hovers on the Flyway

It was hawk day on the Flyway! We saw a rough-legged hawk hovering, northern harriers and rough-legged hawks flying, and two Northern Harriers perching – the first time that we’ve ever seen two together! Migration patterns can alter as populations change and habitat increases or diminishes. I would love to see more of them using the Mississippi Flyway – the large treed islands aren’t harrier habitat, but open islands and sandbars are excellent places for open ground hunters like these.

Eagles and Coyotes and Harriers, Oh My!

December 13, 2021: A Northern Harrier

Eagles and coyotes and harriers, oh my! Winter has finally arrived and the solstice is almost here. As the ice begins to thicken, coyotes step out on to the Mississippi river. The ice is easier to travel than the underbrush next to the river and is, in the middle of a highly populated area, quite remote. Coyotes can move around, access new food resources, travel relatively unbothered, and chase Northern harriers in broad daylight. Mr. North and DNF are deep
