July 27, 2023: News and NestFlix from Decorah and the Flyway

These Flyway turtles appear to have yellow 'eyebrows', which means they are false map turtles!

Looking to escape the heat? Sit down somewhere cool and enjoy our NestFlix! In Decorah, DH2 is learning the skills it will need post-dispersal. How long is our eaglet likely to stick around? Brett Mandernack’s Decorah Eagle transmitter study found that eaglets averaged 162 days of age at dispersal, which means that DH2 is most likely to disperse on or around September 15. However, we might see and hear less of our eaglet in the coming days. DH2 is almost

July 12, 2023: A synchronized fly-in – NestFlix and news from Decorah!

July 11, 2023: DH2 on the Y-Branch

How is DH2 doing? We have a NestFlix round-up from Decorah with videos that show all the rewards and pitfalls of being a fledgling eaglet: synchronized fly-ins, perching pitfalls, food chase breakfish delivery, and warm sunny days! We hope you enjoy these videos as much as we did! Before the round-up: we’ve had some questions regarding DH2’s eventual dispersal. Brett’s research found that eaglets from the Decorah nest dispersed in early September on average, although some individuals dispersed earlier and

June 29, 2023: DH2 considers fledging.

It’s time for NestFlix, so put your feet up on the bark-a-lounger, grab the popcorn, fix yourself a cold beverage, and get ready for videos from Decorah, Great Spirit Bluff, and the Flyway! In Decorah, DH2 is taking her sweet time to fledge and building skills and confidence as she hops, hovers, and branches ever higher in the tree. Great Spirit Bluff has been tough, but Jaycie P/60 survived last night’s attempted owl predation and it was wonderful to see

June 20, 2023: Beautiful HM

Happy National American Eagle Day, everyone! DH2 turns 75 days old today, which means that fledge is right around the corner! We’ve seen our eaglet – I’m leaning toward ‘her’ right now based on size and fledge timing, although we don’t have a way to confirm that – wingersize, trampoline, and hover as fledge draws near. Will DH2 branch or just fly away? We’ll find out soon! Several people have expressed concern about DH2’s dinner menu. Is our eaglet really

When will DH2 fledge?

June 12, 2023: DH2 wingercizes and hops!

When will DH2 fledge? Our little eaglet will turn 67 days old this afternoon and has been learning its wings and building its strength as it wingercizes, jumps, bounces, and generally trampolines around the nest. While we don’t have an exact date of departure, we do know that: Male eaglets develop more quickly and tend to fledge earlier than their female siblings, although there is some overlap. In ‘The Bald Eagle’, Mark Stalmaster states that ‘…a single fledgling will fledge

May 12, 2023: NestFlix and News, Decorah Edition

May 11, 2023: Like father, like son or daughter! DH2 shows off its warbling skills as it furls and unfurls its unwieldy wings!

DH2 enters its sixth week of life today! During week five, our not-so-little eaglet got better at eating rough pieces of food, self-feeding, standing, and shooting poop. It wingercized unwieldy wings, began building leg and flight muscles as it hopped and stomped, played house, tween-preened the keratin sheaths that covered its emerging wing and tail feathers, and lost the last remnant of its egg tooth on May 10. If DH2 wasn’t sprawling around the nest, it was pestering Mom and

May 6, 2023: Nestflix and News (with pelicans!)

May 4, 2023: DH2 relaxes in N1, the sky reflected in its eyes.

We have your Saturday NestFlix! HD2 entered its fifth week of life yesterday and hit the standing milestone on Wednesday. Watch out below – projectile pooping is about to enter a new era! We also saw unihemispheric sleep, sweet eagle dreams, an intruder, and DH2 playing ‘house’. What a charming week! On the Mississippi Flyway, we’re enjoying a new Instagrammable log. Pelicans, Caspian terns, cormorants, and bald eagles are all showing up for selfies and videos! We hope you enjoy

May 2, 2023: NestFlix and News from Decorah and Decorah North!

May 1, 2023: DH2's fish pillow - a tasty white sucker.

We have your nestflix! In Decorah, DH2 explores self-feeding and shows us its tiny popping pinfeathers, HD makes a difficult fish delivery, and HM starts a rousing game of limbo with the very wonky stick. DH2 is getting big and it’s time to raise the crib rails! At Decorah North, we see some really interesting grackle behavior. Even if you don’t watch the whole video, I absolutely recommend checking out the song spread – it made me think of courting

April 20, 2023: Amazing HD!

April 20, 2023: HD brooded through rain, snow, and graupel today, keeping DH2 safe and warm beneath him.

Rain and hail made it a long morning for HD, who spent most of it protecting DH2 from the weather. His rain-soaked feathers were glossy and slicked with water but – like another wonderful eagle Dad who nested here – he continued his watch. I am in awe as our eagles once again show us what they will endure to protect their offspring. Eagles are incredible! April 18, 2023: A mega-movie raptor roll!

April 18, 2023: Like father, like DH2!

We’ve got your mega-movie raptor roll and some feeding observations! Still worried about DH2? As of yesterday, the little peaglet had been fed an incredible 84 times. HM did the most feedings (71 to HD’s 13) while HD provided most of the meals (38 to HM’s 2). As the first video shows, HM and DH2 have dialed feeding in! I also enjoyed the near miss with a PS (the hazards of being an eagle parent!), the lovely looks at DH2
