Broken Egg in Decorah

03/11/19: Broken Eagle Egg in Decorah

We’re sorry to let everyone know that one of the eggs at N2B has broken. It was stuck to Mom’s feathers when she exited the nest for shift change this morning. The contents were still fluid, which means that the egg wasn’t frozen, and the egg was one of the older/browner eggs. Eggs become stained as they are rolled in the nest, which, until all the eggs have picked up roughly the same amount of color, means that older eggs

03/07/19: Fabulous frosty feathers at the North nest

Tonight we’re catching up with the North eagles and the Great Spirit Bluff falcons! We have owls, close-ups, a really cool conversation, a beautiful morning, some rather stiff prey, and Newman the falcon. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be the ‘conversation’, ‘morning’, and Newman videos…but that would be a tough choice, since I loved all of them. Thank you so much for watching, everyone. Happy Saturday and Sweet Eagle Dreams to all of you! Decorah North

D27 and D24 phone home!

March 9, 2019: D27 and D24

We got postcards from D27 and D24 this week! Both are doing well and in the Decorah area. While we haven’t seen them side by side at the same time yet, their winter ranges clearly overlap, so it’s not inconceivable they are spending some time together. Perhaps they have shared (or squabbled) over a carcass, or perched in trees overlooking the same valley. Either way, we are thrilled to hear from both of them again! Stay safe and well-fed, you

March 7, 2019: Mom and the mouse

This morning’s nestflix is all about…mice! Mom doesn’t appreciate it when the mice get going, but even her protests – and her late morning mouse snack – don’t stop them! I loved all of these videos, but I especially enjoyed Mom’s misty breaths (slow the video down for a real treat), the close-ups of Mom and DM2, and two mice briefly glamping under Mom’s lovely tail! Finding D27!

March 2, 2019: D27

Amy and I decided to take a trip to Decorah after Ferryville Bald Eagle Days to see if we could find D27. It was a sunny, cold day and the snow was deep, but we were willing we take a shot! Armed with the latest coordinates from Brett, we decided to start at the hatchery looking for her radio signal. DM2 greeted us and flew overhead as we pulled in, which we took as a good sign. John quickly spotted

March 1st: DE and DNN mega-reel, owls, and the egg cup.

March 1, 2019: DM2 at N2B!

We have a Decorah Eagles/Decorah North Eagles mega-reel for everyone today, including owl intrusions, close-ups of eagles and eggs, nestorations, and shift changes! I loved all of these videos, but especially DM2’s beaksicle, Mr. North’s sticky gift, and glimpses of the eggs. I can’t say that I liked the owl at the North nest, but I was very impressed by the full frontal response from both eagles! Before we break out the popcorn and beverages, we wanted to talk about

Owls (Strigiformes)

This post was originally published on January 31, 2013. We’ve seen or heard these three owls at our Decorah or Decorah North nests. GHO have also been seen at Great Spirit Bluff. Owls are a large and diverse group of mainly nocturnal birds. Over 200 species are distributed among 27 genera worldwide, ranging in size from the tiny Elf Owl (weighing as little as 31 grams or one ounce) to the massive Blakiston’s Fish Owl (weighing as much as 4.5
