DN12: Eaglet development at almost two weeks

April 11, 2020: Mr. North and DN12

We’re catching up on videos today, but I wanted to share this footage of DN12 before the roundup. DN12 was 11 days old when this video was made. Eaglets gain roughly two pounds in their second week of life. They experience rapid growth in features like beaks, culmens, and footpads, start replacing their white natal down with thicker grey thermal down, and begin exploring the nest. Although they aren’t yet standing on their toes, they are able to sit up

Remembering DN11

March 31, 2020: Eaglet 'twins' DN11 and DN12

We are saddened to report that Decorah North Nest eaglet DN11 passed this morning about 5:56am CT. He/she appeared to have some sort of obstruction yesterday or looked as if it was attempting to cast a pellet. At 10 days old that is a bit early for pellet casting, but we were keeping an eye on the eaglet all day. Distress was noted early this morning and he/she appeared lethargic and moving slowly with some breathing difficulty, and passed shortly

April 9, 2020: D36, D34, and D35

Was the baby fed today? Yes! D36 enjoyed a nice breakfish in bed in this morning. As Sherri pointed out, the youngest hatchling showed nice neck strength and strong legs yesterday as it lifted itself up with a determined push. In a split second the slightest look, nudge, or other perceived offense can turn a

Your questions, answered: Will the third egg hatch? Why did the first two eaglets hatch so close together?

April 7, 2020: D34 and D35

It’s April 7 and a lot of you are wondering about the third egg. Will it hatch? It could! It has been almost 34 days since Mom laid her third egg, which is 33 days and 20 hours old as I write this. But her third egg almost always hatches 36 to 37 days after it was laid. If she goes 36 days, which is fairly common, hatch should happen on April 9th. We could see pip later today or

We’re still waiting for the third egg, which was laid 32 days ago Decorah North: DN11 and DN12 are both six days old. DN11 explored outside the eggcup yesterday – a milestone in an eaglet’s life! We have four eggs at Great Spirit Bluff and are expecting hatch there on or around May 3rd. We also
