November 9, 2021: NestFlix and News!

November 9, 2021: The trees of Eagle Island looked like Christmas trees...if bald eagles were Christmas ornaments!

We have your night-time NestFlix! At Decorah North, DNF and Mr. North are busy with nestorations. Nest-building is a big part of pair bonding, but Mr. North wasn’t quite ready to give up his fish to DNF this morning – or welcome visitors to the North nest. On the Flyway, two American white pelicans photobomb five adult bald eagles! Look for bufflehead ducks in the background. Thank you so much for watching, sharing, learning, and especially for caring! I hope

November 5, 2021: Raptor Movie Mega-Roll! Is that…Mom and DM2?

November 5, 2021: Mom and DM2 on the Skyway at 5:18 PM CDT

Kick up your feet and grab the last of the Halloween candy – we have your Friday night raptor mega-roll! It was a beautiful day for nestorations and squirrel al fresco today! DNF and Mr. North brought in 11 sticks and one grass delivery today: a light day after yesterday’s heavy lifting, while we saw Mom and DM2 eating squirrels today! Mom enjoyed her squirrel on the pond perch at noon, while DM2 flew into N2B with a squirrel! After

Monday NestFlix Movie Matinee!

October 30, 2021: Mr. North

We have your Monday Nestflix movie matinee! Nest work is kicking into high gear at Decorah North as DNF puts everything she has into getting a stick placed just so! We also get to see an opossum and a pileated woodpecker at Decorah North, and cedar waxwings at Great Spirit Bluff. This is a great time of year to watch swans and eagles on the Flyway. How many eagles can you count on Eagle Island? I counted 30 and more

Four Foraging Stories from the Flyway

October 24, 2021: Mississippi Flyway

It’s late October and the birds we watch on the Mississippi Flyway are pouring south while local plant and animal populations dwindle in response to diminishing daylight length, colder temperatures, and reduced food availability. How do migrating birds find enough to eat in the diverse, rapidly changing habitats they travel through? Read these four foraging stories to learn more about how birds cope with the challenge of finding food on migration! River Dreaming Picture a Mississippi River lake: a lake

October 27, 2021: Nestorations and eagle antics at the North Nest and on the Mississippi Flyway!

October 26, 2021: DNF scrapes in the nest

We have your NestFlix! Nestorations are well underway at the North nest as Mr. North delivered the season’s first cornstalk this morning, although a lot of today’s excitement involved new arrivals! Our camera operators reported at least five juvenile and subadult eagles passing through the Valley of the Norths – and for every eagle we see, there are almost certainly more that we don’t. For the most part, DNF and Mr. North ignored them, although nobirdy is going to take

Nestflix for Breakfish! Decorah North and the Mississippi Flyway

October 18, 2021: Mr. North at the North Nest

It’s NestFlix for Breakfish! In Decorah, DNF’s morning repast is interrupted by a juvenile eagle. Could it be DN13 or DN14? We have more information about that in the round-up! I’m sure that a lot of us swooned over close-ups of Mr. North, but I also enjoyed seeing the nest taking shape in Mr. North’s breakfish video. Eagles are early risers, so if you want to see live nestorations this time of the year, you’ll need to tune in at

Friday night Nestflix from Decorah, Decorah North, and the Flyway!

October 15, 2021: Mom on the Maple

Happy Fri-yay! Kick your feet up, grab the popcorn, and join us for movie night: we’ve got Nestflix from Decorah, Decorah North, and the Flyway! In Decorah, Mom graces us with an appearance on the maple. The Decorah North eagles are coping with guests on the North Super Flyway, including a lovely and very plucky subadult. Don’t miss the three-way eagle interaction! The adult-to-adult dinner confrontation could have saved the very hungry subadult’s life, since it stole the dinner prize

Four Migration Stories from the Flyway

June 28, 2021: Sandhill cranes on the Mississippi Flyway

We are seeing so many birds on the Flyway that I’m thinking about hiring an air traffic controller! We’ve identified 68 species of birds so far, 82% of which require water-based or water-adjacent habitat to nest, forage, and roost. Why do so many birds stop here? Lake Onalaska is an island of habitat for birds migrating south along the Mississippi River through the American interior. The lake’s islands, sandbars, braided channels, floodplain forests, and mudflats provide birds with everything they

October 12, 2021: Decorah, Decorah North, and the Mississippi Flyway!

October 11, 2021: DNF (left) and Mr. North (right) at the North nest.

Welcome back, everyone! It’s great to see Mr. North and DNF again and we’re getting tantalizing views of Mom on the maple and bluff up above the hatchery! We’re still not sure where the Decorah Eagles are going to nest this year, but we’ll be watching all three nests (N1, N2B, and N3) and hope to have a boots-on-the-ground report within the next week. Can we remove the dead tree that Mom and DM2 are nesting in right now? Removing
