January 17, 2025: The Week in Pictures!

January 16, 2025: DNF

Welcome to the week in photos! Today’s Friday photo album features some favorite captures from Decorah North, Trempealeau, and our Golden Eagle work, plus a throwback from the Flyway. Thanks so much to our camera operators and videomakers for finding such special moments and to all of you for watching, sharing, learning, and especially for caring! It was a rollercoaster week, weatherwise, at the Decorah North Nest! The week opened with what seemed like a polar plunge, but was really

January 6, 2025: Building and Beaking!

January 6, 2025: Building and Beaking at the North nest! https://youtu.be/5ZM5Pyfbvio?si=w9JWDXYzdExnakkL. It’s a great time to watch DNF and Mr. North flirt – albeit in a very eagle way! – as things ramp up. Look for beaking, body brushing, gentle nibbling, footing, and side-by-side perching. More on eagle courtship and bonding here: https://www.raptorresource.org/.../bald-eagle-mating

What are we looking forward to this week? Mr. North and DNF are busy testing and improving their new digs as they pile on husks, stalks, and grass. Shag carpets are back, baby! We recorded our first copulation of the season on December 7th, although we don’t really expect things to ramp up until the last week of January. But it’s a great time to watch DNF and Mr. North flirt – albeit in a very eagle way! – as

January 2, 2025: Alive and Sticking!

January 2, 2025: DNF looking lovely in the New Year!

DNF and Mr. North rang in the New Year with plenty of nestorations and visits from a screech owl and – we think! – another eagle. We saw stick discussions, carpet laying, and plenty of courtship activity. The North nest is still alive – and sticking! – in 2025! What are we looking forward to this week? Nestorations will continue, perhaps with an increased focus on the nestbowl and soft materials. It’s also likely we’ll see or hear more copulation

May 8, 2023: What are we looking forward to this week?

May 8, 2023: HM's new slippers! HD2 is huddling beneath her on a rainy, wet morning in Decorah.

What are we looking forward to this week? We’ve got hatch at Great Spirit Bluff, nestling falcons at Alma, Great River Energy, and the Dubuque Courthouse, and some projected big nights on the Mississippi Flyway. Let’s break it down! Great Spirit Bluff Hatch has started at Great Spirit Bluff! Falcons normally begin full incubation after they lay their penultimate egg and it generally takes about thirty-three days from the onset of full incubation to the beginning of hatch. Savanna laid

April 24, 2023: What are we looking forward to this week?

April 24, 2023: Hatch has started at the Canada Goose nest!

What are we looking forward to this week? Hatch has started at the Canada Goose nest, which means the leap of faith should happen tomorrow or Wednesday! The Missouri Turkey Vultures laid their first egg in the loft early on Sunday morning, so we’re looking for a second egg later today or very early tomorrow morning. DH2 entered its third week of life on Friday, so we’re watching for grey thermal down, emerging ‘mohawks’, and possibly pellet casting. It appears

April 18, 2023: What are we looking forward to this week?

Did I expect to find myself completely charmed by Canada Geese? I did not!

What are we looking forward to this week? We’re anticipating hatch in the goose nest with the leap of faith following about 24 to 48 hours afterwards! We’re guesstimating hatch to begin on April 22, but it could happen a little earlier or a little later than that. Decorah and Xcel Energy Fort St. Vrain Eaglets In Decorah, DH2 will turn two weeks old on Friday! In its second week of life, our little eaglet will gain roughly two pounds,

April 3, 2023: What are we looking forward to this week?

Hatch at N1 We’re on hatch watch in Decorah! Our best guesstimate date is April 4th, but hatch is a process, not a single event. Remember to look for a pip – starring, cracks, or holes that indicate hatch is imminent – towards the blunt side of the egg, not the pointed side. While you wait for the eggs to hatch, you can watch the horses! The first eaglet to hatch will be DH1. Reclutch at Decorah North? Will the Decorah

March 28, 2023: What are we looking forward to this week?

March 27, 2023: HD rolls his eggs. We're glad to see that he's growing a new talon in.

What are we looking forward to this week? Eggs, eggs, eggs! We have four eggs at Dairyland Power’s Alma plant, at least one egg at Great River Energy’s Elk River campus, and eggy falcons at Minnesota Power’s Hibbard plant and three other sites that aren’t online. We don’t know how many eggs Mother Goose will lay, but she’s laid four so far and should be going into full incubation soon. We’re also looking forward to hatch in Decorah (our estimate

March 20, 2023: What are we looking forward to this week?

March 20. 2023: HM glows in the bright, warm sunlight.

What are we looking forward to this week? On Friday, we’ll be hosting a movie night at Convergence Ciderworks in Decorah! Come watch EaglePower with John, Dave, and Amy, meet Dave’s Red-tailed Hawk Jewel, learn more about our programs, and drink delicious cider. Doors open at 5:30 and the program starts at 6pm. More here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1404200043743501. We’re in what Bob used to call the incubation doldrums at our Decorah Hatchery and Xcel Energy Fort St. Vrain eagle nests. But we’re

March 6, 2023: A Canada Goose at N2B

Another Egg for Ma FSV? As of this post, we have one egg at Decorah North (hatch estimated on or around March 28), two eggs in Decorah (hatch estimated on or around April 4), and two eggs at Fort St. Vrain (hatch estimated on or around April 10). Ma usually lays three eggs, so it’s possible she could lay again on March 9th. Are the geese going to lay eggs again? We’ve seen them checking out N2B, but HD doesn’t
