January 24, 2023: Decorah and Decorah North NestFlix

January 24, 2023: HD getting a stick just right!

We have your Decorah and Decorah North nestflix! Mr. North, DNF, HD, and HM have made wonderful progress removing snow: trampling, smushing, rolling, and scraping to get down to the substrate before covering the nest floor with layer upon layer of shredded corn husks and fine grass. I loved all of these videos, but I especially enjoyed Mr. North pole-vaulting into the nest, HD’s giant stick, HM and HD perching together, beautiful white-tailed deer, and some hilarious North nestorations! I

January 20, 2023: Friday Night NestFlix and News!

January 19, 2023: HD and HM.

Our eagles rode the winter storm out, although they don’t look especially excited about snow recovery and removal. We’re glad that they didn’t fly south for the winter, but I sometimes wonder how they feel about about deep snow and all of the uninvited guests! Grab your favorite beverage and snacks and put your feet up – time to Friday night NestFlix and chill! Decorah Eagles January 20, 2023: HD to the nest, several SA’s in the area, HD &

January 17, 2023: Who turned on the switch at the North Nest? North News and NestFlix!

January 17, 2023: DNF near the North nest.

Who turned on the switch at the North Nest? Mr. North and DNF have been very busy with nestorations! The two laid down a nice framework of sticks and filled it with a veritable shag carpet of husks, stalks, and grass, replenishing it as squirrels filch material for their own nests! Turkeys also appear to be responding to longer days and diminished snow cover: we’re seeing males displaying and females roosting in trees. Now I understand how turkey vultures got

January 10, 2023: Nestorations and bonding activities are ramping up!

January 9, 2023: Bonding doesn't go as expected.

Nestorations and bonding activities are ramping up at both of our nests! We’ve seen tail swishing, mutual vocalization, and a few bonding attempts in Decorah, although HD especially appears to be learning the ropes when it comes to eagle love. Fortunately, he’s quite good at sharing meals and wonky sticks! Meanwhile, DNF and Mr. North are busy bringing in and arranging sticks and soft materials to create an egg-cellent nursery for this year’s clutch of egglets and eaglets. We’re impressed

January 8, 2023: Decorah News and NestFlix!

January 6, 2022: HD eats a frozen fish stick!

Happy Sunday, everyone! We’ve got a small but lovely selection of videos from Decorah, including beautiful chilly close-ups, a wonderful fly-in, and a frozen fish stick for lunch! We hope you enjoy them as much as we did. Decorah Eagles January 8, 2023: Beautiful chilly close-ups, HM and HD – https://youtu.be/UF1_Xx39JTQ. Just what the title says – beautiful if chilly close-ups of HM (left) and HD (right). Listen at 13:48 and you’ll hear the neighborhood crow watch sounding the alarm.

January 4, 2023: NestFlix and News from Decorah!

January 4, 2023: HM and HD in snow.

Is anyone else tired of what seems like the eleventy-billionth winter storm this season? Decorah and Decorah North were hit with snow, rain, and sleet today: a dreaded mix that can be tough on wildlife adapted to January’s usual snow and subzero temperatures. Despite the frightful weather, HD and HM stayed busy with nestorations, a shared lunch, and some preening. The days are already five minutes longer than they were on the solstice and we’ve seen behavior that indicates both

January 2, 2023: News and NestFlix from the North Nest!

January 1, 2023: Happy New Years! Mr. North (left) and DNF (right) ring in the New Year with nestorations! https://youtu.be/oTICYV8UFso

We have your Decorah North NestFlix! While we expected to see a little less of DNF and Mr. North during the recent deep-freeze, it was still a relief to see them ringing in the New Year with nestorations! I enjoyed all of these videos, but I especially liked Mr. North’s successful fishing trip, his first trip back to the snow-covered North nest, and the beautiful white-tailed deer in the snow. Thanks so much to our camera operators and video makers

News and Nestflix from Decorah!

December 20, 2022: HD and HM visited N1 at 2am. We're not sure what prompted their late night visit, but it might have been an owl strike.

Grab a warm drink, hunker down, and enjoy HD and HM’s snowy NestFlix nestorations in Decorah! Several of you have expressed concern about Mr. North and DNF. It’s not uncommon for eagles to disappear during extremely cold weather, since they seek shelter and reduce activity to maximize energy gain and minimize energy loss. We saw the Norths last Wednesday (thanks, Pauline) and we’re looking for them again now that things have warmed up. If we don’t see them on camera

December 15, 2022: Decorah North NestFlix

December 15, 2022: Mr. North's not-so-roast beast!

Mr. North and DNF enjoyed an early Christmas dinner this afternoon! Mr. North flew in with a large not-so-roast beast, vocalizing and mantling as another eagle – DNF? – flew past over the pasture. He took a breather before tucking into his ready-to-eat meal at 3:04, tearing and gobbling down large chunks of meat. DNF flies in to join him at 10:37, dropping down into the nest and moving in despite Mr. North’s mantling. Slow down the video at 10:34

December 12, 2022: Monday Night NestFlix and News!

December 11, 2022: Don't get in HM's way! That stick is not going to place itself.

We’ve got your Monday night NestFlix! A lot of you are curious about whether HD and HM are first-time egg-layers and parents. While we don’t know for sure, I thought I’d look back at 2019 for some clues. As long-time watchers will remember, Mom accepted a new mate (DM2) after Dad disappeared, and Mr. North did the same (DNF) after Mrs. North disappeared. While Mom and DM2 had some trouble getting things to click, Mr. North and DNF got their
