We have your news and NestFlix from Decorah North! DNF and Mr. North are hard at work raising the rails, making sure the nest bowl is soft and well-padded, and replacing material stolen by intrepid squirrels. I hope you enjoy these videos as much as we did!
December 13, 2023: Cheeky squirrel raiding the North nest! https://youtu.be/h0-eCddDv4A?si=5OO0uWWvTiPvFIr8. You get everything just right and then a squirrel comes in and throws a party! The North nest is a somewhat risky place for squirrels, but safer than the ground – and closer than the nearest corn field! We get some lovely close looks as the squirrel checks out the bedding and moves it around before departing the nest.
December 12, 2023: DNF and Mr. stick delivery, stick tango, nestorations – https://youtu.be/qyqiyhSYggU?si=3awBFvtTjJnhYdSx and the North’s fluff up the nest: https://youtu.be/QIu44sCpmYo?si=GtK5Duq90D7ejAuE. Nestorations are in full swing as the nesting season draws nearer! Tuesday was a bright, sunny day with favorable winds: an excellent day for nestorations, fishing, and wandering eagles.
December 12, 2023: Mr. North brings a fish and everyone wants it! https://youtu.be/jLHtSutZvxw?si=XuzpKynA0OIuMzCM. This video has some wonderful footage of Mr. North catching and eating a fish despite a tail chase by DNF and three other eagles, all of whom want Mr. North’s fish. It’s not always easy to be the top fisher eagle!
December 11, 2023: DNF brings a huge stick into the nest and struggles to place it – https://youtu.be/9UHWmYBFYHs?si=GlXtL8pWF5mgsJSu. DNF brought a Charlie Brown Christmas tree into the nest on December 11…or maybe a new perch to spruce the place up! How much weight can bald eagles carry? We have a blog for that! https://www.raptorresource.org/2023/12/13/how-much-weight-can-a-bald-eagle-carry/.
