Meet Intern Owen!

Intern Owen and a Red-tailed Hawk

Meet Owen, an intern from U.W. Platteville! He’s studying Biology with an emphasis in Zoology and Environmental Conservation. His favorite experience so far was seeing the first Golden Eagle of the year pass through the station yesterday. He’s hoping to continue to get more field experience and work on his bird ID. Thank you so much for supporting the Raptor Resource Project. Your donations make this program possible!

Meet Peter!

Meet Peter! He’s an intern studying Ecological Restoration at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. So far, he’s learned how to properly trap and handle birds and has strengthened his bird identification. Going into the last half of his internship, Peter’s hoping to gain more knowledge on identifying birds and learn more about how they interact with their environment during certain times of the year. This internship has been a huge help in gaining knowledge on how to identify these birds. By the end I would love

Program Spotlight: Luther College Banding Station

Dave Kester, station master at our Decorah hawk banding station, teaches a student intern how to safely handle a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk. Correct handling of a bird ensures that neither the hawk nor the handler gets hurt!

The awe never really goes away,” says Mary McTeague ’22. “Whenever I handle a hawk, I’m struck by both their beauty and their strength.” Brynn Olsen ’23, an environmental studies major, agrees. “You’re holding a wild raptor—it never gets old.” Luther College students like Olsen work with the Raptor Resource Project to band migrating raptors, growing our body of knowledge about how these birds live and move in a changing world. McTeagueand Olsen are two of six Luther interns employed
