Decorah Eagles and Blogs

Sweet Eagle Dreams!

April 14, 2023: Sweet Eaglet Dreams, DH2!

This blog on eagle sleep was first published in 2017. We’ve recorded adult eagles dreaming, but this is the first time we’ve captured it in an eaglet. In addition to what appears to be dreaming, look for preening, earholes (the dark holes behind and below DH2’s eyes) and the remnants of DH2’s egg tooth, which is already rubbing away.  Do Bald Eagles Dream? Do bald eagles dream? Some footage of DH2, the seven-day-old hatchling in Decorah, got us discussing this

April 13, 2023: Nestflix and news!

April 11, 2023: A tiny adorable poop shoot!

We have your NestFlix! I enjoyed all of these videos, but I especially loved DH2 getting feisty with Dad (go, DH2!), the tiny cute PS, and the close-up of Mother Goose! We hope you enjoy the videos as much as we did and we’re looking forward to our hatch fundraiser tomorrow! Looking for more hatchling eaglets? The Fort St. Vrain nest started hatch yesterday! You can watch that site here: https://www.raptorresource.org/birdcams/xcel-energy-cams/ and keep up with it on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/445733962172528.

Your Questions, Answered: DH1 and DH2

April 11, 2023: DH2 sports a little crop!

Followers had a lot of questions about eaglet DH1 and DH2. Why did DH1 die? Are HD and HM first-time parents? What did the eagles do with DH1? Here’s what we know. Why did DH1 die? DH1 hatched at 4:10 AM on April 5th and died some time between about 7 PM and 12:20 AM. The day was cold and rainy, the eagles tucked a large dead trout into the egg cup, and DH1 was not fed in its first

April 7, 2023: Three feedings for DH2!

April 7, 2023 HM feeds DH2

If – like me! – you spent much of today imploring HM and HD to feed their eaglet, you’ll be happy to know that HM fed DH2 three times today so far! It was wonderful to watch her go from: Dropping a whole fish on a nestling. Carving up the fish but eating the bites herself. Trying to put fish tidbits into DH2’s mouth, but mostly missing. Successfully feeding DH2! Our camera operators reported a nice poop shoot at around

DH2 hatching and a message to the broken-hearted nest observer

April 6, 2023: DH2 hatching.

What does hatch look like? We got a wonderful view of the final moments today as eaglet DH2 at our trout hatchery nest made its way out of the shell. We remain hopeful for the Decorah nest and will answer some of your questions about the hatchery nest and the north nest tomorrow. It has seemed like an awfully tough year for the bald eagles we watch in Decorah and across the United States. For you, the broken-hearted nest watcher,

April 6, 2023: While one eaglet hatches, another one is gone.

April 6, 2023: HM and DH1

While one eaglet hatches, another one is gone. We’re sorry to announce that DH1 perished sometime last night. We don’t know why, but we do know that the weather was challenging and HD and HM are new parents, with a lot to learn about feeding and caring for eaglets. As one of our moderators said, ‘A lot of hope was riding on those little wings’. We’re sad about DH1’s loss but hopeful for better things to come for DH2.

Welcome to the world, DH1!

April 5, 2023: Welcome to the world, DH1!

We are over the moon about hatchling DH1! The little pip squeek shook its shellmet off at 4:10 this morning and HD arrived for his first shift at around 7:05 AM. I love the care that he takes getting into the nestbowl for his first-ever brooding shift. It’s hard to believe that the tiny, helpless bit of fluff nestled under his feathers will grow up to become a ruler of the skies! DH1 is HD and HM’s first hatchling and

April 3, 2023: Pip pip hooray…hatch is almost here!

April 3, 2023: We have pip in Decorah!

Pip pip hooray! Our eagle-eyed volunteers spotted a little starring on one of the eggs at around 6:53 this evening. Is it on the blunt side of the egg? Check! Are we on hatch watch? Check! And does the egg appear to jump or rock a little bit? It does. It has been eleven years since we watched eaglets hatch in this nest, but DH1 is on its way! March 28, 2023: What are we looking forward to this week?

March 27, 2023: HD rolls his eggs. We're glad to see that he's growing a new talon in.

What are we looking forward to this week? Eggs, eggs, eggs! We have four eggs at Dairyland Power’s Alma plant, at least one egg at Great River Energy’s Elk River campus, and eggy falcons at Minnesota Power’s Hibbard plant and three other sites that aren’t online. We don’t know how many eggs Mother Goose will lay, but she’s laid four so far and should be going into full incubation soon. We’re also looking forward to hatch in Decorah (our estimate
